Subsequent East Asian Meetings April 9, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — lilyw @ 9:11 pm

At our first meeting of the quarter we decided to hold all meetings on Fridays at 330 PM instead of Wednesday from 12-2. I hope this works for everyone, and I hope no one has any conflicts. We’ve also set up meetings on a bi-weekly basis for the rest of the quarter. On April 24th Victor will be presenting, on May 8th Matt Driscoll and Matt Mewhhinney, and on May 29th Lily will be presenting. We do not have anyone for our last meeting on June 5th, and there are plenty spots. We can also add meetings if these dates don’t work. As some of you may know, I (Matthew Driscoll) have taken over for Lily this quarter so if you have any questions, or would like to set a date to give a presentation, please direct them to me at mdisso1@umail.ucsb.edu. I hope everyone can make the next meeting on April 24th! Also, I will be updating this website with more calls for papers on a regular basis, so check here for conference calls.

Matt

Starting from fall quarter of 2008 we will be putting together a new colloquium for graduate students in all disciplines related to East Asian studies. Students will have a chance to respond directly to one another’s work, and to speak with visitors on a range of topics related to professional activities. We aim to bring together fellow students from all corners of the campus working on or interested in related topics of East Asian studies, in hope of creating an interdisciplinary space for discussion and support.

The East Asian Colloquium will mainly consist of two components: student paper workshops and staff/faculty professional workshops. Much time will be devoted to the evaluation of student papers. Each meeting, we will allow for one or two students to submit a piece of their own work at least a week before the class meeting. Their peers will read these essays, and discussion will be devoted to students’ attempts to understand one another’s research and help their colleagues develop a more inter-disciplinary approach to using and sharing information. In addition to learning about research being done by colleagues at UCSB, students will receive help preparing their own work for submission to conferences, workshops, and publication.

In addition to the student paper workshops, students will also receive scheduled visits from faculty, staff, and advanced graduate students who can offer advice and assistance on various aspects of the professionalization process. These opportunities will provide colloquium participants with insight into some aspects of the academic experience, and will also give students an opportunity to share valuable information with one another about their own experiences.

Our F08 meetings will be scheduled ever other friday starting from Oct. 17th, 2 pm at HSSB 2252——-. For more information, please contact Lily Wong at lilywong@umail.ucsb.edu.
